Waffles?

I’ve always liked waffles… I have fond memories of the waffles my grandmother used to make in an old General Electric waffle iron. Since then, I’ve tried waffles from many different restaurants, and have tried to make the best possible waffles here at home.

Just recently the handle on a Krups waffle iron that I received as a gift a few years ago broke – so I need to get a new waffle iron. I think that I’ll replace it with a round style – apparently they tend to cook more uniformly. I think that I also want one of the more commercial styled ones as well – but we’ll see ;^)

Some of the standout places in recent history for waffles include a small restaurant in the summer village of Gull Lake called The Wooden Shoe. They make some very fine Belgian waffles – and will cook them to your preference (I like mine to be crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside). They’re delicious just with some butter and maple syrup, or topped with some mixed berries and whipping cream.

Another place just happened to open up in out neighborhood a couple years back, Morango’s Tek-Cafe. They have a nice multi-group espresso machine, and have a good supply of French presses to have coffee at your table – the coffee itself isn’t really anything special, and they have a pretty limited food menu. One item in the menu includes waffles, which are apparently made with a secret family recipe of the owners. They have a pretty heavy duty waffle machine to cook them. The waffles are good, but I think that they’re a bit over-priced.

Waffle Recipes

Over the years I’ve tried many pancake/waffle mixes… and while they did the trick at filling the void at the time, I’m not sure that I ever actually had a ‘perfect’ waffle. For waffle recipes, try these searches on AllRecipes.com, or MrBreakfast.com.

Below are some recipes that I’ve tried, along with comments and some modifications that I might have made to them.

I think that I’m going to start trying different waffle recipes now, in our Krups waffle/sandwich maker. And then catalog the recipes here What the heck, I think it sounds like fun… at least the kids like waffles too, so I can try and include their feedback for the recipes as well.
